Tips for Children
At Home Safety for Children
- If you feel unsure about anybody, trust your feelings. Avoid being alone with him or her. This includes relatives and family friends.
- Be sure you know how to contact your parents or another responsible adult.
- Don't get into an elevator alone with a stranger who makes you feel uncomfortable. If a stranger gets on the elevator after you, and you feel uncomfortable, get out immediately.
- Call your parents, the doorman or a neighbor if something is making you uncomfortable or scared. Have an emergency phone list next to each phone.
- Don't tell a telephone caller that you are home alone. Say that your parents can't come to the phone right now.
- Do not open the door to a stranger. Keep the chain latched when opening the door until you can identify the person.
- Ask anyone delivering a package to come back later, or, to leave it with the doorman or the superintendent.
- If a stranger calls or comes to the door with a story that a parent or other relative has been injured and that he will take you to the hospital, do not go. Call one of your emergency numbers to find out what is the true story. Parents do not send strangers to pick up their children.
- Discuss this advice with your parents frequently.
