Tips for Children
Street Safety for Children
- Wait on the curb until the light turns green and the Walk or Hand sign is on. Look in all directions before you cross. Cross only at corners with the green light and the Walk sign. Walk; do not run.
- Do not assume that a driver sees you, or that he will stop. Make eye contact with the driver who is making a turn so he knows you're exercising your right of way. Many drivers from out-of-town do not know that right-on-red is illegal in New York City.
- Watch out for vehicles backing up. Not all vehicles have warning horns.
- Watch out for people riding bicycles, or using skateboards, scooters or rollerblades who ignore traffic rules.
- Avoid horseplay. Pushing another child off the curb is dangerous.
- Use extra care in crossing streets on dark, rainy or snowy days. It is more difficult for drivers to see you and to stop a car in those conditions.
- Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades really belong in the park. If you do use yours on the sidewalks, it is your job to watch out for other people. Please refer to the next article for further information on bicycle safety.
- Bicycles are required to obey the same traffic rules as cars when ridden by children over the age of 12.
