Tips for Teens
Bus, Subway and Taxi Safety for Teens
- In subway stations, stay in sight of the fare booth until you board the train. Avoid cars with groups of rowdy people. Ride in the car with a conductor. Avoid a car that is nearly empty.
- Wait for buses near an open place of business. Avoid bus shelters if you think you could be trapped there. Keep money or your MetroCard out of sight until you are on the bus. All bus drivers have two-way communication and should help you if you are threatened. If you think there might be a problem, stay near the driver.
- In a taxi it's a good idea to carry about $5.00 as "escape money." Use it immediately if the driver makes you uncomfortable by driving dangerously or speaking to you in an inappropriate manner. Give him the money while you exit quickly from the taxi when he stops at a light. Be certain that the cab is near a curb and that it is safe to get out. Note the number of the taxi if you can.
- If you are being picked up by a car service, only use one displaying the number given to you by the dispatcher. Be sure that it's the correct car before getting into it. All licensed services display a number and the company name.
