Part 1: Why, What, & How
60 minutes
Why do colleges require essays? What is their purpose? What do you need to include in a college essay? And how do you get started on something so daunting?
This workshop will address all of these questions, and provide meaningful examples of the college essay,  concrete details, and more. Together, we will read and discuss what makes a personal essay successful,  discuss the tools you can take away for your own essay, and review and brainstorm responses to the Common App prompts. Students will leave this workshop with ideas for their own essays and a stronger idea of what the college essay does and does not entail.

Part 2: Messy First Drafts
60 minutes
This workshop will be writing focused, and students will bring laptops, pens/paper, headphones, and whatever else you need to feel comfortable and at ease. We’ll first discuss what a first draft really means for the college essay, and how it might be different from drafts you’ve done for high school classes. We’ll talk about why it’s important to WRITE LONG and WRITE MESSY. Finally, we’ll start on two short  “chunks” of writing so that every student leaves with the start of a first draft.

Part 3: Creating Momentum
60 minutes
Students should once more come prepared to write. We’ll first look at another 1-2 sample essays or excerpts and discuss their use of details and other strengths. We’ll also troubleshoot questions and concerns about your own drafts. For the last part of the workshop, we’ll write! Students can expect to leave this workshop with a substantial portion of their first draft written and a sense of direction, momentum, and confidence in their own voices. They will also leave with a hand-out of concrete next steps and notes on how to prioritize them.

The cost of this workshop series is $275 per student for member and non-member families. Registrants will be invoiced separately.
