While the college search is an important rite of passage for many students, it should not be the only focus during the high school years. Using her 25+ years experience in higher education and her work as Executive Director of Colleges That Change Lives (CTCL), Maria Furtado will provide parents with both philosophical and practical reminders to help guide their students through the college search. Join Maria as she discusses the media’s portrayal of college admission and the reality, liberal arts and STEM education (with an emphasis on the lifelong value of a liberal arts education), the history and mission of CTCL, the financial aid landscape (merit and need-based aid), return on investment and tips to de-stress.
Colleges That Change Lives (CTCL) is dedicated to the advancement and support of a student-centered college search process. It supports the goal of each student finding a college that develops a lifelong love of learning and provides the foundation for a successful and fulfilling life beyond college.
Maria Furtado is the Executive Director of the nonprofit organization, Colleges That Change Lives. She has worked in higher education for over 25 years, including two CTCL schools, Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Eckerd College in St Petersburg, Florida. Maria speaks around the country to students, parents and counselors about college rankings and popular misperceptions about college admission, the strength and worth of a liberal arts education, the lifelong value of a college education – the return on investment - and offers tips for students and parents on how to manage the college search.
