Ellen Birnbaum

Ellen spent her career in Early Childhood Education at the 92nd Street Y. She began as an Early Childhood teacher at the Nursery School in 1982. After teaching for fifteen years, she became the Assistant Director and then Director of the school. Following her role as Director, Ellen became the director of 92Y’s early childhood programs. Ellen retired in 2021 after 38 years of service. 

In 2007, Ellen co-authored Practical Wisdom for Parents: Demystifying the Preschool Years published by Knopf. A sought-out expert in her field, Ellen has made both television and radio appearances. She and her co-author, Nancy Shulman, attended the National Book Festival in 2008 sponsored by Laura Bush. Ellen has served on the board of ISAAGNY, and Temple Shaaray Tefila. She currently serves on the board of All Souls Nursery School. Ellen holds a BA and master’s degree from New York University. 

Ellen has been married for 52 years and is the proud parent of two children and four grandsons.
