Stephen S. Murray

Stephen S. Murray is in his seventh year as Head of School of the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey after serving ten years as Headmaster of University School, an all-boys day school in Cleveland, OH. He began his career at Deerfield Academy, where over the course of his 15-year tenure, in addition to teaching and coaching, he served in various roles, including Assistant Headmaster, Academic Dean, and Dean of Students.  

Steve received a B.A. in Political Science and French with honors from Williams College, an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, an M.A. in French Literature from the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy.  

He has served on the boards of numerous not-for-profit and civic institutions, including the Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives, Citizens’ Academy Charter School (Cleveland, OH), the International Boys’ School Coalition, Greenwich Academy (Greenwich, CT), Christina Seix Academy (Trenton, NJ), The Island School (Eleuthera, Bahamas), and Robert College (Istanbul, Turkey). A lifelong teacher, his most recent senior elective at Lawrenceville focused on epistolary literature and the fascination with private lives in 18th century France.  

Steve is married to Sarah Aldrich Murray, whom he met in high school, and they have five children: Sam, Maggie, James, Grace, and Henry.
