The following are the recommended NYC school vacation dates for independent schools in the 2026/27 academic year, provided by the Guild of Independent Schools. Labor Day: Monday, September 7 (school closed)
Opening Days: Week of September 8-11
Rosh Hashanah: Friday, September 11 (sundown), Saturday, September 12
Yom Kippur: Monday, September 21 (some schools closed)
Fall Weekend/Indigenous Peoples Day: Monday, October 12 (schools closed)
Diwali: Sunday, November 8 (likely DOE takes off Friday Nov. 6)
Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 (school closed)
Winter Vacation:
Friday, December 18, classes end
Monday, January 4, classes resume
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.: Monday, January 18 (school closed)
Lunar New Year: Saturday, February 6 (likely DOE takes off)
Feb/Spring Breaks
Option A – split weeks:
- Friday, February 19, classes end
Monday, March 1, classes resume - Thursday, March 25, classes end
Monday, April 5, classes resume
Option B – 2 days in February and 2 weeks in Mar/April:
- Presidents’ Days: Monday, Tuesday, Feb 15, 16 (some schools closed)
- Spring Break: Friday, March 12, classes end
Monday, March 29, classes resume
Eid al-Fitr: Wednesday, March 10 (Starts at sundown on Tuesday 3/9 – some schools closed)
Eid al-Adha: Tuesday, May 18 (starts at sundown on Monday 5/17 – some schools closed)
Memorial Day: Monday, May 31 (schools closed)
Closing days: Week of June 7 – June 12 or June 14 – June 18
Juneteenth: Saturday, June 19
