NYC Preschool Applications: It’s (Almost) Never Too Late!
By: Ann Levine, Parents League School Advisor
The application process is in full swing and you, as the parent of a child entering school for the first time, should be delighted by the range of schools you are discovering and the amount of information you are acquiring.
Your progress is good, your school list is strong, and you are managing your to-do list daily. If your next question is, “Am I too late to be completing and submitting applications?!” the answer is a resounding and reassuring no.
You have identified preschool programs that align with your hopes and dreams for your preschooler, and this is the time to look ahead (not too far!) to process what you have read, heard, and learned, then apply your insights and instincts to shore up confidence in your choices. These suggestions will help you reach and cross the finish line at just the right moment.
Preschool Application Deadlines and Extensions
Most applications are due by late November, but often extend to December and January. Be aware of other deadlines as well. Typically, they include the opportunity to schedule school-related activities for prospective families once applications are received. Onsite tours, classroom play dates, and meetings with admissions directors are common pieces of the process, and provide additional school information once applications are completed and returned.
Think Ahead
Remember to map out what needs to be accomplished so you can assign yourself soft deadlines to manage the remaining time. And use the time well! This will minimize stress and avoid the must-rush feeling of completing final steps. Eliminate anxiety so your child does not notice or wonder about the sudden “change in temperature.”
Parent Essays for NYC Preschool Admission
Keep in mind that your first essay draft can serve as a model for all applications. Simply tailor your basic version to subtly customize for each school. Be aware of length, readability, and content, placing focus on capturing your child’s essence and strengthening your case for falling in love with a school that loves you back. The word “essay” is the usual term used to describe a piece of the application that allows you to share your child’s special attributes and qualities to express a compelling fit with the school.
Edit Your List of Schools
An important goal at this stage is to edit your list to include only those choices that stand out in terms of your understanding and alignment with a school program: what is referred to as “fit.” Know that preschools specialize in early childhood education, introducing appropriate developmental learning in meaningful and joyful ways to define true educational beliefs.
School Tours
During your school tour, be mindful of the classroom setting. Environment matters and is important in terms of creating a space, a routine, and a schedule children can follow, learn from, and experience consistently.
NYC Preschool Learning Styles
Overall structures and goals are similar from preschool to preschool, but the delivery of instruction differs. Schools often describe themselves as an essential source of skill-based learning, social-emotional learning, and physical learning. There is focus on organization and intention so children can explore, discover, and acquire important understandings in gentle, gradual ways.
Location of NYC Preschool Choices
Be sure to consider location as you decide your preschool finalists. It will help determine what is reasonable in terms of daily drop-offs and pick-ups so you do not add extra time to family routines. It will also further connect your home and school neighborhoods to create true New York-style community through parks, libraries, museums, and playgrounds that add a kick to raising a city kid.
Exmissions at Preschools
Preschools are dedicated to exmissions, the process of sharing information and supporting needs when the time comes to move from one program to the next. Teaching staffs know the importance of partnering on an individual basis with young learners and their families to set a course for seeing and appreciating the wonders of the world that lie ahead.
